Check out the list nowLast autumn’s unveiling of the curiously named but cool-looking R nineT was an appropriate way for BMW to mark its 90th anniversary as a motorcycle manufacturer. Blending classical styling cues with unusually high levels of finish and detailing plus built-in potential for customisation, the unfaired boxer twin celebrates the past in a distinctly modern fashion.

bmw motorcycle dealers boise idahoThe German firm’s air-cooled boxer twins from the Seventies and Eighties are popular with the growing ranks of custom bike builders, who create unique machines mostly based on inexpensive European and Japanese models from that era.

The R nineT is intended to bring some of that handcrafted retro image to the showroom. BMW was fortunate in having an ideal powerplant in the 1,170cc, air-cooled boxer motor formerly fitted to the R1200GS and still employed in the R1200R roadster. For the nineT it is fitted with a new exhaust system with twin upswept silencers, from Slovenian specialist Akrapovic, on the left of the bike.

The tank and accessory seat hump are fashioned from hand-brushed aluminium. The metal is also used for the intake ducts, fork yokes and handlebar clamp. Other neat details include the headlight lens, which has a small BMW roundel at its centre. The plate showing model information is riveted to the steering head in period fashion; the instrument panel is a modified R1200R unit that blends traditional clocks with a modern digital display. The result is a bike that you could spend many hours simply admiring. All of which would be no good if it didn’t ride well, but fortunately BMW has got that part right, too. From the low seat the nineT is a simple, naked roadster with a slightly more upright riding position than the R1200R, thanks to a wide, one-piece handlebar that is set farther back. It is light, at 222kg with fuel, manageable and simple to operate, with no traction control or choice of riding modes. The dohc, eight-valve boxer motor makes 15bhp less than the latest liquid-cooled unit, but has a broad spread of torque and enough power for very lively performance.

The fuelling is crisp and the mid-range acceleration strong, meaning that the nineT pulls cleanly at low speed, surges past traffic with a twist of the throttle, and sits smoothly and effortlessly at the legal limit. There’s plenty of speed in hand at that point, though as with any naked bike the wind tugs at your shoulders long before the top speed of about 130mph. The BMW is pleasant to ride at a more relaxed pace. It has an appealing character, enhanced by the deep, distinctive bark of the exhaust and occasional endearing splutter on the overrun. Its chassis is based on a new tubular steel frame, which eschews BMW’s novel Telelever suspension that is normally fitted to its boxer twins. Instead, there are telescopic forks borrowed from the S1000RR, though without the super-sports model’s adjustability. The handling is light and agile, giving a sportier, more entertaining ride than the classical styling might suggest. The wheels have traditional wire-spoked construction, but are wide enough to carry sticky street tyres.

Braking is impressive, thanks to large, 320mm front discs and Brembo Monobloc calipers, together with an efficient ABS system. So the R nineT is fun to ride, and its charm doesn’t end when the engine is turned off. Parts such as the headlight, silencers and complete rear subframe including pillion seat can be unbolted quickly, encouraging customisation. Perhaps the BMW’s only real drawback is that inevitably it’s expensive by naked standards, costing £11,600 in standard form or almost £12,500 as tested with accessory rider’s seat, pillion seat cover and useful heated grips. So not the bike for impecunious custom builders, then, but a retro roadster that combines heritage, good looks, high quality finish and entertaining performance in one cleverly integrated package, with potential for easy personalisation. That last feature will doubtless appeal to many, but the nineT is so nicely put together that apart from fitting that shapely aluminium seat hump I’d be tempted to leave it just as it is.

Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 SE, from £10,432 The BMW’s closest rival in both performance and attitude, Guzzi’s 1,151cc V-twin makes an identical 110bhp with lots of torque and handles well despite being heavier than the nineT. Triumph Thruxton, from £7,349 Triumph’s popular 865cc parallel twin makes 68bhp and can’t match the BMW for speed or intricate detailing, but has retro charm, sweet handling and a much lower price in its favour.
