More than 10,000 people are expected to line High St as the wave off 7000 riders as they make their way down to Phillip Island for the motorcycle grand prix. Police will be out in force conducting random alcohol and drug tests, road blocks, speed enforcement and automated numberplate recognition. Road policing command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said Victoria Police would have as many officers on the road as possible. “The motorcycle grand prix turns our attention to the safety of riders, however we should all be reminded to pay attention and drive responsibly,” Assistant Commissioner Fryer said. He said last year 27 people lost their lives on Victorian roads in October.
Forty-two motorcyclists, one pillion passenger and three off-road riders have died so far this year which is twice as many riders for the same time last year. “I was particularly pleased (last year) with the behaviour of riders going to and from the island they were law abiding and importantly were riding safe,” Assistant Commissioner Fryer said. “We want riding to be enjoyable but most of all we want it to be safe.” Police are reminding riders to plan ahead by considering the route they’ll be travelling, wearing protective gear and riding within the limits. Operation Motosafe will run throughout October, focusing on reducing road trauma, particularly involving motorcycles. The Australian MotoGP runs from 21 — 23 October. There is something uniquely exciting about owning and being able to ride a motorbike.
